County Tyrone-based haulier Freeburn Transport has taken delivery of the first Renault Trucks E-Tech T electric heavy goods vehicle operating in Northern Ireland, marking a significant milestone for low-emission freight transport across the region.

According to Energy Live News, the vehicle will initially be used on trunking routes between Freeburn depots before expanding into wider operations as the company builds operational experience with the technology. The trial is backed by the Department for Transport-funded eFREIGHT 2030 programme, which provides dedicated support covering charging infrastructure, route modelling and driver training to ensure efficient day-to-day operation from the outset.

Richard Lee, operations manager at Freeburn Transport, said: "The plan is to use it on regular work at the start, see how it performs and then build from there. There is no point having it as a showpiece. We want to see what it can do."

The move supports Freeburn's ambition to reduce transport emissions while evaluating how battery-electric technology can be integrated into its broader fleet operations. Electric HGVs are identified as having a particular role in decarbonising road freight on predictable regional routes where overnight charging is practical, allowing operators to replace diesel vehicles with zero tailpipe emission alternatives while helping customers achieve their own sustainability targets.

A successful trial could lead to further electric truck deployments across the Freeburn fleet, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable approach to freight transport in Northern Ireland. The eFREIGHT 2030 programme's combination of infrastructure support, operational planning and driver training is designed to lower the barriers to electric HGV adoption for regional hauliers evaluating the technology for the first time, reducing both the technical and operational risks associated with fleet electrification.

For the Northern Irish logistics sector, the Freeburn trial represents one of the first practical demonstrations of battery-electric heavy freight capability on local routes, providing real-world operational data that could inform wider fleet electrification decisions across the region's haulage community in the years ahead.
