Dublin prepares for NFL’s first visit to Ireland
Dublin is set for a landmark weekend as it hosts Ireland’s inaugural NFL game, featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park on Sunday, 28 September. Attendance is expected to exceed 70,000, making it one of the city’s largest sporting events in recent years.
Kick-off is at 2.30pm, with gates opening from 11.30am. Gardaí will be deployed extensively to manage traffic, crowds, and ensure public safety. Heavy congestion is anticipated across Dublin city centre and the wider Dublin 3 area, peaking around kick-off and immediately after the game, which typically lasts three to four hours.
A range of fan activities is planned, including a ‘Tailgate Party’ at Merrion Square and a fan march from Fairview Park to Croke Park. These events will involve localised road closures and significant pedestrian traffic, reinforcing the need for proactive journey planning.
Transport authorities are advising attendees and commuters to use public transport where possible. Irish Rail will run additional services, while Dublin Bus offers high-frequency routes to both Croke Park and the city centre, with a 15-minute walk to the stadium. The TFI journey planner and app provide full route details.
Security measures include a clear bag policy and a dedicated bag drop at Ballybough Community Centre. Residents are asked to be respected by visitors travelling to and from the venue.
For businesses, commuters, and visitors, the combination of crowd, transport, and security management requires early planning to minimise disruptions.
