Irish Rail invests in faster, greener freight to meet growing demand
Irish Rail is overhauling its ageing freight fleet, replacing 50-year-old wagons with faster, higher-capacity models in a bold move towards greener, more efficient logistics. The €44m investment in 150 new wagons—supplied by W.H. Davis—marks a significant shift for the network, with potential to scale up to 400 wagons over the next decade.
The new fleet will boost payload by 33% and raise speeds from 80kmh to 110kmh, supporting the increasing demand for rail freight while aligning with sustainability goals. With delivery beginning in 2026 and service entry by 2027, it signals serious intent to shift more freight off roads and onto rail.
As rail freight cuts emissions by up to 70%, this move isn't just a capacity upgrade—it's a strategic step in future-proofing supply chains.
