Yusen Logistics has officially opened its new 1.2 million square foot Sustainable Distribution Centre in Northampton, bringing together advanced automation, smart warehouse technologies and low-carbon operations. The facility is expected to employ around 150 people, reinforcing Yusen Logistics' long-term commitment to the UK market and the Northamptonshire region.
Yusen Logistics is part of Japan's NYK Group, a global shipping and logistics conglomerate listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and headquartered in Tokyo. The group reported revenue of ¥2,387.2 billion for the year to March 2024.
The Northampton facility, designed to deliver greater operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact, creates a scalable platform capable of supporting long-term customer growth and increasingly complex supply chain requirements.
The structural driver is rising customer demand for automated, low-carbon distribution infrastructure that can scale with increasingly complex supply chain requirements, pushing logistics providers to build sustainability credentials directly into new facilities rather than retrofitting existing sites.
The centre incorporates solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, low-carbon operational technologies and resource-efficient processes, contributing to a BREEAM Outstanding rating, one of the highest standards for sustainable building performance.
David Evans, managing director of Yusen Logistics UK, said, "Today marks an important milestone for our business. The Sustainable Distribution Centre has been developed to meet the evolving needs of customers and global supply chains. By bringing together advanced technology, efficient operations and a highly skilled workforce, we are building a future-ready logistics platform that delivers long-term value for our customers while supporting sustainable growth."
The opening ceremony welcomed customers, business leaders and community representatives, highlighting the strategic importance of the investment for the wider region. Visitors were given first-hand insight into how automation and digitalisation are transforming modern distribution operations.
For the sector, the facility illustrates how logistics operators are combining automation and sustainability credentials into single-site investments to meet both customer growth and environmental expectations simultaneously.
