Tougher enforcement flagged as marine safety breaches continue
A new report from Ireland’s Marine Casualty Investigation Board has raised serious concerns about ongoing non-compliance with lifejacket regulations at sea, even after repeated tragedies. The watchdog is urging the Transport Minister to consider using gardaí, naval officers, and harbour masters to enforce existing laws, following a fatal incident in Galway Bay where multiple safety lapses were identified.
The report outlines how the failure to wear or properly maintain personal flotation devices, combined with alcohol consumption, continues to cost lives. In the recent case, only one out of five lifejackets aboard was functional, and the victim had alcohol levels six times the legal driving limit.
Policy alone isn’t shifting behaviour, enforcement may need to step in. If fines and safety campaigns aren’t working, what role should your organisation play in building a culture of compliance?
